How Expert Janitors Reduce Dust in the Home or Office
Dust can be a pain, especially after construction. The following tips are what the janitors use in their homes. Become your home or office cleaning expert by following these simple steps to reduce dust.
Furnace Filters
- Change furnace filters at least 4 times a year. This helps remove current allergens and dust. This also keeps your system running efficiently
- Purchase furnace filters that catch pollen, dust mites, fur and other allergens or try doubling up the filters
- Filters are recommended to have a MERV rating of 7 or higher to compare with a HEPA filter.
Vacuuming and Carpet Care
- Vacuum daily or as often as possible
- Many vacuums are designed to capture the dust in you home or office and actually help clean the air.
- Make sure your Vacuum has a good HEPA filter so dust does not escape from the vacuum
- Shampoo/clean carpets at least once a year
- Carpets are one of your larges filters and capture many dirt and dust particles
Dusting
- Dust often, daily if possible
- Dust a different area or room each day to control overall dust content in the house
Ducts and Vents
- Vacuum out ducts and vents and wash intake vents as needed.
- Have your ducts cleaned if needed (see EPA's article to determine if this is right for you)
- Put cheese cloth or a damp sponge in the vents to help catch dust and dander
Other Ideas
- Purchase an air purifier with a H.E.P.A. air filter
- Keep your windows and doors shut. This helps keep airborne particulates from outside creeping into your home or office.
